Just a stone’s throw away from Royce Hotel and Casino is Grill Seoul Korean BBQ Restaurant. I was on my phone and following the dot on my GPS, in the process of looking for Matam-ih Kapampangan Restaurant, when I stumbled upon this modern building. I had a good view of the interiors of the restaurant, its walls being mostly made of glass. Despite its unassuming and incredibly vague store signage (KOREAN BBQ), it was intriguing to find that most of its tables were packed with customers, and its parking area was full. As I walked past the restaurant, I noticed a group of Koreans enter the building. Curious, I decided to return the next day and try it out for lunch.
I’ve tasted authentic Korean BBQ in Seoul, and a few good Korean BBQ restaurants in Metro Manila, so I had fairly high expectations from Grill Seoul. Thankfully, this restaurant did not disappoint. For my lunch, I ordered 200g of chicken drumsticks marinated in a sweet and spicy sauce and a cup of plain rice. As is customary in Korean restaurants, a variety of side dishes or banchan served alongside my grilled order. I was likewise served a bowl of soup, a plate of crisp lettuce leaves and a thermos of ice cold water.
My chicken order arrived raw and the waitress went ahead and grilled it for me. I would have wanted to cook it myself, but then she worked quickly and they took out the hot pot of charcoal as soon as she was done. I have to say, service at this restaurant was excellent. The waitstaff acted swiftly, were visible, attentive to the needs of their customers and friendly.
I happily devoured my dish, which was seasoned and grilled to perfection. The chicken had a mild kick to it. I’m not a fan of spicy food, but the heat was just right, in my opinion. I can’t say the same for their spicy soup, which I could barely consume. Overall, the portion size was good for the price I paid, and one 200g order of meat was enough for a table for one. Other than that, I also had several refills of their apple potato salad. Delicious.
Would I come back? Definitely. But perhaps with family or friends so I can try the other items on their menu. I have my eye on their beef bulgogi!
